Inspired by the archetype of the First Lady, yet distinctly her own story, this groundbreaking new work from IF Theatre and 2009 Art & Soul Featured artist Gabrielle Patterson explores the profound weight of being a Black woman in America—and the universal resonance of that experience for all women. This is not a biography; it is a visceral examination of what society demands from women who rise, highlighting how the specific scrutiny faced by Black women illuminates the shared struggles of gender, expectation, and identity.

In five pivotal moments, the audience witnesses the quiet negotiations and loud declarations that define a life lived under glass. Election Night brings the terror of “no room for mistakes.” The Hairdresser becomes a sanctuary where public perception invades private identity, dissecting why certain styles are forbidden and how stereotypes shape reality.

In Marriage Under Glass, we see the unasked-for roles, the sacrifices made for a husband’s destiny, and the juggling act of expectations. How does one defend a relationship without being branded the “angry Black woman”? As Re-election approaches, the focus shifts to the most vulnerable: how does a mother protect her sons in a world that fears them?

Finally, in Going Home, the story culminates in a powerful testament to resilience. While rooted deeply in the Black female experience, this narrative echoes the universal truth of womanhood: the constant balancing act of strength and vulnerability.
